چکیده

all 29 patients, a history of eating raw oysters or other raw or undercooked seafood before illness onset was uncommon and was only reported by 1 patient. Although V. vulnificus has not been proven as the cause of gastroenteritis, Hseuh et al. have suggested that such results might have occurred because patients with diarrhea seldom sought care from a large teaching hospital or saved stool samples for investigation (7). V. vulnificus infection was first reported in humans in 1979 (1). Since then, most case reports have focused on immunocompromised persons and their risk from eating raw oysters among (4–6). Our study found that a considerable proportion of V. vulnificus infections in Hong Kong occur among healthy persons. Furthermore, severe forms of the infection, such as necrotizing fasciitis and septicemia, are relatively common among healthy persons, although they may cause fewer deaths than they do among persons with predisposing medical conditions. Among healthy persons, V. vulnificus infection is most likely associated with a history of cutaneous injury caused by handling seafood, which can allow the bacteria to enter the body through an open wound. The risk of exposure is more important in this locality than in other areas where swimming or eating raw oysters and undercooked seafood are the major risk factors (4,6–8), possibly because fresh seafood is widely consumed, and seafood is easily accessible in wet markets in Hong Kong. Our study shows that the risk is higher during the summer, which is consistent with the fact that V. vulnificus is more active in warmer temperatures (9). We suggest that all persons, even healthy persons, exercise caution to avoid injury while handling seafood. Physicians should consider possible V. vulnificus infection when diagnosing a rapidly progressive skin and soft tissue infection in a healthy person who reports an injury from handling seafood. P.H. Analysis of complete genome sequence and major surface antigens of Neorickettsia helminthoeca, causative agent of salmon poisoning disease

Neorickettsia helminthoeca, a type species of the genus Neorickettsia, is an endosymbiont of digenetic trematodes of veterinary importance. Upon ingestion of salmonid fish parasitized with infected trematodes, canids develop salmon poisoning disease (SPD), an acute febrile illness that is particularly severe and often fatal in dogs without adequate treatment. We determined and analysed the comp...

Analysis of p51, groESL, and the major antigen P51 in various species of Neorickettsia, an obligatory intracellular bacterium that infects trematodes and mammals.

The p51 gene that encodes the major antigenic 51-kDa protein in Neorickettsia risticii was identified in strains of Neorickettsia sennetsu and the Stellantchasmus falcatus agent but not in Neorickettsia helminthoeca, suggesting that p51-based diagnosis would be useful to distinguish among them. groESL sequencing results delineated the phylogenic relationships among Neorickettsia spp.

Neorickettsia helminthoeca and salmon poisoning disease: a review.

Neorickettsia helminthoeca is an obligate intra-cytoplasmic bacterium that causes salmon poisoning disease (SPD), an acute, febrile, fatal disease of dogs. The complex life-cycle of this pathogen involves stages in an intestinal fluke (Nanophyetus salmincola), a river snail (Oxytrema silicula), in fish, and in fish-eating mammals. This complexity has created confusion with respect to the variou...

“Defense” injuries in attacks on humans by domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) and jaguar (Panthera onca)

This communication describes two attacks by domestic and wild carnivores in Caceres County, localized in the Pantanal area, an extensive flooded plain in Mato Grosso State, Midwest region of Brazil. The first attack took place in an urban area and was caused by a Rottweiler dog (Canis lupus familiaris) created by the family of the victim. Another attack occurred in a rural area, caused by a jag...

DNA damage in dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells: An in vitro study

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential use of a DNA comet assay, DNA fragmentation fluorimetric assay and reactive oxygen species levels as potential biomarkers of genome conditions of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) isolated from dog canine teeth. Mesenchymal stem cells were isolated from the dental pulp collected from dog teeth. The results obtained suggest the ideal moment for cl...
